Gaku Kato - photographer based in Tokyo, Japan

Grew up in Yokohama, Kanagawa pref. In high school, Became interested in creativity and craftsmanship under the influence of friends in the design dept. Inspired by Martin Munkacsi's work at the exhibition "Snapshots Cast Their Spell [Radiant Moments]" (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, 2010) and decided to become a professional photographer. While majoring in journalism at university, also attended a vocational school in order to learn the basics of photo development. After graduating, Studied under Hidekazu Maiyama as an assistant photographer. In 2019, Became independent and set up own business named GakuKato-photo-office. Since then, Mainly has taken portraits for various editorials. While keeping in mind the expression of a story through styling and spatial direction, pursuing a shooting style that also emphasizes bringing out the model's identity.
