It's not that I dislike smiling photos, but I think it's often done on purpose or because people are simply embarrassed to be photographed. The person's authentic self −− I don't know if there is such a thing, but I aimed to capture it in this work. Portraits of a person with a straight face, one that would not usually be shown to anyone, stimulates the imagination of what kind of person they are. Everyone has tiny moments when they calmly look at themselves, and capturing that is what I aim to do in all of my portrait works.
